This is my second marine star and it is similar in weight and feel to the electronic Marine Star Chronograph.I had been on the lookout for a well priced automatic for a long time, and when this came along in a great deal I jumped on it.The blue face is very close in color to the other blue Bulova Chronographs, but it's different enough to not feel like I'm wearing the same watch. As you can see from the picture, there is a small round window between the 8 o'clock mark and center post that has a view into the inner workings of the watch. When you hold the watch steady, you can see a couple of the mechanisms oscillating back and forth, along with the barely twitching sweep of the second hand. There appears to be about 5 "ticks" in the second hand for every second moved, so it is not an entirely smooth sweep. If you shake the watch a little bit, you can also see the winding mechanism moving back and forth in the background.

Taking the watch off and looking at the back, the whole back face is a transparent window into the inside of the watch. The winder mechanism is closest to the window and it moves around in a circle if you gently shake the watch. If you hold the watch up to the light you can see straight through and out the small front window. You also get a pretty good view of one of the gears marching around in a circle, along with several other notched wheels that are moving much slower.

Overall, you definitely have a sense of a high precision mechanical instrument in your hand (or on your wrist). There is no calendar or any other secondary function so the watch is just about the time and how it's keeping it.The outer wheel does turn for chronograph timing if you wish.

The winding of the watch seems to last about a day and a half. After I didn't wear the watch for two days, I had to restart the watch and reset the time. When I skipped wearing the watch for a day, it still had the correct time 24 hours after not having been worn.

Overall I'm very happy with the watch.I've only had it a couple of weeks so I can't speak to its longevity, but so far it's behaving exactly as I had hoped. There was a note in the box indicating that the watch mechanism was from Japan and the band was from Hong Kong. I hadn't really looked at Bulova much until I got my first Marine Star about a year ago, but it has held up extremely well also, so I've been very happy with the brand as well so far.
