(More customer reviews)This is my second Atomic Solar G-Shock. Although I like my previous model (GW330A-9V) I found it a bit bulky and also wanted a model that picked up the atomic signal from more than just the Fort Collins transmitter. The new GWM5610 seemed to fit the bill perfectly. It is based on the classic 5xxx G-Shock shape which is very low profile compared to other models, but it's one of the new Multiband 6 models - it can receive the Atomic transmission from China now, as well as the US, UK, Germany and Japan. This is ideal for me as I travel a lot in the US, UK, Europe and soon China as well. This makes the 5610 an ideal travel watch. OK, so even without an atomic signal it is still pretty accurate (around half a second fluctuation over 24hrs, I believe) but when you have planes and trains to catch it's nice to not have to worry about what time it actually is. Of course, being a G-Shock, it's also waterproof down to 200m and extremely tough.
I purchased the watch for the features more than the appearance (I couldn't find any other Multiband 6 models in the classic shape) but it certainly is a nice looking watch. The band and case are a lot more glossy than the pictures convey, and the neon green lettering punches out nicely. It's got a nice retro feel to it and is eye-catching without being too OTT.
The watch has automatically received the atomic signal a couple of times, but seems a lot more fussy about where it's situated than my other atomic G-Shock. My GW330A-9V will happily receive anywhere in the house, whereas this 5610 has to be positioned more accurately and near a window it seems. I am well within the Fort Collins range.
The solar battery charge was on full when I first opened the box and hasn't moved since. I don't believe the watch was on display anywhere, but it's odd that it was fully charged out of the box. My GW330A-9V took a few days of sunlight to get to max charge.
On my wrist, the 5610 is very low profile and I can barely feel it. That's just what I wanted as I was always bashing my GW330A-9V on things and getting it caught on clothing. I was always very aware of its presence, whereas the 5610 just becomes a natural part of my arm.
Now for the downside. As the images perfectly show, the display is a little strange. Outside in the daylight it looks great, but under artificial light (especially at low levels) it becomes quite hard to see - the digits become reflective and blend with the background. You can still read it, but instead of a quick glance it takes a second or two. This is not a "deal breaker" for me, but I know for many people it will be. Please keep the above information in mind before you drop the cash.
Overall, I'm very happy with the watch so far. I wish they hadn't sacrificed so much of the display clarity in the name of style, but all the goods far outweigh that one niggle. I will soon be leaving on a month-long trip and will report back should any problems arise.
